Century old cottage to move

The residents of Seal Beach are encouraged to attend a special City Council workshop tonight at 5, July 2, to discuss the future of a 115-year-old beach cottage that has been donated to the city.

The council is expected to officially receive the donation of the building and discuss the relocation of the historic structure at the meeting.

The cottage, one of the oldest surviving structures in the city, is presently at 342 12th St., near the Landing Avenue intersection. It is the only original “beach cottage” still standing in the city. It was originally at Anaheim Landing and later moved to12th Street.

One option for the old building’s new home would be on the Greenbelt, next to the Red Car Museum.

“The Melanie and Don Blayney family have agreed to donate their family’s 115 year old cottage to the city to be a part of our heritage,” wrote Mayor Ellery Deaton in an email to her constituents earlier this week.

“The Blayney family is building a new home on the site of their family’s cottage and are kindly donating the antique cottage that used to sit on the Anaheim Landing Bay prior to the Navy becoming the property owner,” Deaton wrote.

City officials discussed the donation of the cottage during a special closed session meeting of the council Monday night, June 29.

Contractors recently put up a fence around the property, apparently a prelude to construction.

On Monday, June 22, Building and Safety Division inspector W. Chen issued a stop work order on any construction at the site for failure to “obtain permit approval prior to the commencement of any demolition or construction work.” The stop work order was taped to the fence. Now the building will be moved and preserved, saving it from the wrecking ball.
