Businesses raise $1,800 for breast cancer research

CrossFit Seal Beach, CrossFit Seal Beach North and Hennesey’s on Main Street in Seal Beach held a fundraising event to benefit breast cancer research, “Barbells for Boobs,” last Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9 a.m. down at the 10th Street beach parking lot.

Combined, Hennessey’s, Beach Fitness and the actual event raised over $1,800 in donations, participation and contributions.

The event drew more than 50 competitors and another 75 or so spectators, supporters and staff.

They packed out the restaurant after the competition with some of the trainers working alongside Hennessey’s bar staff as guest bartenders.

The benchmark workout or WOD (workout of the day) is deceptively simple, 30 ground to overhead lifts for time, better known as “Grace.”

Prescription (called Rx in CrossFit) weight is 135 pounds for men and 95 pounds for women.

The winning time was 1 minute 29 seconds from Alex Colla from Crossfit Seal Beach.

Barb Lands, co-owner of Beach Fitness felt strongly about the event.

“We have been involved with Barbells for Boobs for the last four years, and both my business partners’ mothers are breast cancer survivors.  Our BeachFit Moms program also has had a great deal of support for those affected by breast cancer.  We are proud to be part of such a great fundraising tradition,” she said.

Hennessey’s has also a strong tradition of working on behalf of several charities, including St. Baldrick’s and other cancer support network events.

General Manager Susan Ariano, who helped supervise the guest bartender portion of the event later Saturday said, “We are a strong local advocate for our community and love partnering with businesses like Beach Fitness and Barbells for Boobs.”

The Delta Gamma sorority chapter of Cal State Long Beach also participated in the fundraiser.
