Brothers sail into success

Sean Ayale,11, finished first out of 77 in the Sabot C3 class in the 2012 Jessica Uniack Memorial Beach to Bay Race on July 26, winning the perpetual trophy.

The trophy is given to the first place sailor in the largest class, which is always a C3 class. His older brother, Ryan Ayale, 13, also won the same trophy in 2009. Approximately 150 sailors participated in the “Beach to Bay Race.”

This is the only junior sailing event of the year where the 8-foot-long Sabots ever venture out on the ocean on a 5-mile course from the east end of Shoreline Marina to Alamitos Bay. Sean also placed first in Sabot C3 class in “Twilight Series” races last week.

Junior sailors compete over the course of four Tuesday evenings, three races per Tuesday evening, a total of 12 races. Sean and Ryan are junior sailors at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club.

Sean is a recent graduate of McGaugh Elementary School, and will be a sixth-grader at McAuliffe this fall. Ryan will be an eighth-grader at McAuliffe Middle School.

They live with their parents, Andy and Lina Ayale, in Seal Beach.
