Arts & Crafts Faire: a hand-made event

With summer nearly gone, the good times in Seal Beach are hardly over. In fact, with the start of a new season some events take place that set the tone for the coming holidays and some of the largest activities of the year. As a part of that trend and for more than the past three decades the annual Arts & Crafts Faire has followed on the weekend after Labor Day.

Continuing as the director of the Seal Beach Art Association event is belinda (She had her name legally changed to only her first name spelled with a lowercase “b.”) The former owner of Art on Glass on Main Street moved to the mountains last year.

“Come on down on Saturday and Sunday,” said belinda, who will be in town for the faire.

“She misses Seal Beach,” said Arts & Crafts Faire volunteer Carolyn Yamaoka.

Yamaoka explained some of the key background of the Faire.

“Throughout its entire history everything in the Faire must be hand-made,” Yamaoka said. “This makes it all unique and one of a kind. There is a certain amount of creativity that is necessary to produce something completely hand-made.”

Yamaoka said the backdrop of the Seal Beach pier and the beach adds to the Faire’s atmosphere.

“I look forward to it every year,” she said. “I find that I get a good jump on my Christmas shopping and can find things that I know people don’t already have.”

Yamaoka said that this year, there are probably a few more artisans than craftsmen.

“We will have all different kinds of media,” she said. “There will be photographers, painters, and sculptors.”

In addition there will be also be people who work in metal, leather and fiber.

Yamaoka promised this year’s Faire has many favorite artists returning as well as emerging craftsmen.

Some unique crafts on display will include:

• Custom coordinated home accessories.

•  Handcrafted furniture and accessories.

•  Quality natural & organic body care products

•  Whimsical windchimes, stained glass mosaics, lamps  and more.

•  Handmade hats, hair accessories and jewelry crafted with love from elegant to whimsical.

Faire-goers can meet and mingle with local artisans and craftspeople as they display their work

The Faire will have a festive feel as other local non-profit organizations including the Seal Beach Lions Club Leos (who will cook and serve food), The Woman’s Club of Seal Beach(who will have a plant sale) and the Seal Beach Animal Care Center representatives will be on hand to discuss their mission and upcoming Wag N’ Walk on Sept. 28.

The Seal Bech Arts & Crafts Faire will be held from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
