Los Alamitos High School baseball survives the first round

The Los Alamitos High School baseball team survived its first round game in Division-I action. It bested West Ranch, which hosted the contest on May 16.

The Griffins barely survived that contest, too, edging the competition with a 6-5 victory to advance to the second round.

The Griffins (17-10) had to rally from behind to pull off the win, considering they trailed 5-3 after Tyler Woldanski blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.

However, the Griffins responded in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to grab the lead.

With runners on first and third base, Gianni Castillo blasted a triple to knock in both runners and tie the score at 5-5. Brenden Heffren then stepped to the plate and scored Castillo with a sacrifice fly.

Jake Nix, who started the contest for the Griffins, then tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh to escape with the win.

“He has come through in the clutch for us so many times,” Los Alamitos head coach Matt Nuez said during the regular season. “He’s great under pressure.”

The Griffins actually took  2-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Wildcats took advantage of an error and then Jake Spurlin put the Wildcats ahead 3-2 by knocking in a pair with a double. The Griffins eventually tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats grabbed their second lead of the contest thanks to Woldanski’s homer.

West Ranch finished the season with a 17-9 overall record.

Los Alamitos returned to action against Chaminade at home on Tuesday, May 21 (score unavailable due to production conflicts).
