Question 10: Name three things you will not do if elected.

Matthew Terry

Matthew Terry

First, if elected, I’m not going to use this position to jumpstart a political career in higher office. I’m just a lifelong Seal Beach District One resident who would like to help fix the things we’ve all been talking about for so long.

If I’m lucky enough to serve on the council for four years, or possibly eight, the goal of all my time there, and all the decisions I make, would be to leave a better Seal Beach to the next generation, and nothing else.

Second, I’ll never phone it in. No matter how big or small the issue, I’ll make sure every item before the council gets the attention it needs. I’ll also make every decision with all the facts and an understanding of what every choice will mean for all of us.

Third, I won’t change the things we’ve come to love about District One that make this place so special.

The city’s budget issues have resulted in a lot of tough decisions over the past few years, and there may be more to come. Also, considering all the other agencies that sometimes have the final say on things here, it might feel like we don’t always have full control of our own town. But, if elected, I will make sure Seal Beach always stays Seal Beach.

I would like to use this final opportunity to thank everyone who helped me during this campaign, I am so grateful for all of your support.

Question 10: Name three things you will not do if elected.

1. I will not forget who I serve. District 1 residents and business owners deserve a council member who is accessible, treats everyone with respect, and follows through. Whether we agree or disagree, your concerns matter.

2. I will not make major decisions without seeking community input. Whether it’s development, parking, or the future of Main Street, those directly affected deserve a voice. Residents and business owners should have an opportunity to help shape decisions from the beginning, not simply be asked to comment after a plan has already been developed. Good leadership means listening before decisions are made, being transparent about the process, and remaining accountable afterward.

3. I will not lose sight of the priorities I’ve set. Public safety will remain a top priority, including supporting our police, firefighters, and first responders. Preserving the character of Old Town and Surfside, supporting local businesses, addressing aging infrastructure, protecting our coastline, and spending taxpayer dollars responsibly will remain at the forefront. That means asking tough questions, expecting accountability, and working toward practical, long-term solutions.

Public service isn’t about a title. It’s about people, integrity, and keeping your word. No one person can solve every problem, but hard work, collaboration, and a willingness to do what’s right can make a difference. My commitment is to do my part and remain focused on the needs of District 1.

It would be an honor to serve our community. On November 3, I hope to earn your trust and the opportunity to represent you.
