Question 9: If elected, would you ever seek advice from a past council member? If so, who?
Matthew Terry

Yes, for specific things.
I would seek advice from Joe Kalmick on things like the trash interceptor project in the San Gabriel River as well as the sand replenishment effort at Surfside, so we don’t lose momentum on the work he has been doing that isn’t finished yet.
Not for advice, but I’d also talk to past and present council members to understand the reasoning behind why certain decisions were made by the council. I think knowing what was weighed at the time helps make better future decisions on similar topics.
With that said, the majority of what would guide me as a council member would be the people of District One. I have always loved talking to anyone about this city and what can be done better. I’ve been doing this my whole life. That has helped shape a lot of my priorities and positions that you see in my responses to these questions and on my website. It would continue to do so in elected office.
And I truly mean it when I say the people would help guide me. That’s why I made it a point for my campaign to be self-funded and under $2,000, so that no one feels like they bought a seat at the table, and that every single resident of District One feels like they have an equal voice.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for taking the time to talk with me when I’m out campaigning. I’ve knocked on a majority of doors in District One, and it’s been an absolute joy talking with all of you.

Yes, and I already have! I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with two former Seal Beach City Council members, and I look forward to continuing those conversations. I have tremendous respect and appreciation for those who have served our community before me, especially those who represented District 1, Old Town and Surfside.
I’m open to meeting with anyone willing to share their time, knowledge, and experience. I would especially welcome conversations with former District 1 council members to hear about their successes, challenges, lessons learned, and what they would still like to see accomplished in our community.
Wisdom is golden to me. I want to be a well-rounded councilwoman who listens, asks questions, and welcomes different perspectives, even when we don’t always agree. We can all learn something from one another!
I don’t believe serving our community means starting from scratch. It’s about building on the good work that’s already been done, addressing what needs improvement, and working together to make Seal Beach even better for future generations.
And while I have your attention, I’d like to remind my District 1 neighbors that although four names remain on the November 3 ballot, only two candidates are actively running. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, we’ll face a runoff election in January, bringing additional costs to taxpayers.
I believe in being responsible with our tax dollars, and avoiding unnecessary election expenses is certainly a good place to start!
My door will always be open to our residents. I’m available to meet, hear your concerns, exchange ideas, and answer questions. Your voice matters to me!
I hope to earn your trust and your vote. It would be an honor to serve you as your next District 1 City Councilwoman.
Vote Perla Mendoza on November 3!
