Los Al Divers start 2012 season strong

At the Sunset League Dive Meet last Thursday, March 22, at the Los Alamitos High School Pool, Los Alamitos Senior, Adam Payne dominated the Varsity boys and his sister, Los Al Freshman, Madelyn “Dolly” Payne won silver in the Varsity girls competition.

Sunset League Heir Apparent, Adam Payne did not disappoint.  Los Al’s top diver had a strong showing just one week after getting an invitation to join the USC diving team next fall.  Payne trains year-round with McCormick Divers in Long Beach.

His McCormick teammate, Huntington Beach High School Senior, Alex Pasillas also had a great day earning a place at CIF Division 1 Championships in May in his first Sunset League Meet.  Pasillas will be diving at Cal Baptist University in the fall.  Marina High School Senior, Chris King and Edison High’s former JV Diver Ian Bearss rounded out the Varsity Boys Competition.

In a very tight Varsity Girls event, Fountain Valley High School Senior, Erica Curry won gold edging out Los Alamitos Freshman, Madelyn “Dolly” Payne by three tenths of a point.

Curry is headed to New York in the fall to dive at Wagner College.  Curry and Payne qualified for CIF Division 1 Championships at this first meet of the season.

Both divers train year-round at McCormick Divers as does third place finisher, Marina High School’s Brooke Smith who, like Payne, made her first appearance at a Sunset League Meet Thursday. The Varsity Girls look to shape into a very competitive event with close results for the remaining divers; Edison’s Niki Dunman, Marina HS’s Jaymee Oser, Alyssa Robidoux and Brittany Smith and Los Al co-captain, Junior Leigh Hodgson.
