Charles Cohen, a man who believed that anything could be fixed, lost his short battle with brain cancer Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the age of 72. Just two months ago, you may remember seeing Cohen on the front page of the Sun, proudly displaying the Coyote Warning sign that he installed on the entrance to College Park West, his home since 1965.
Cohen was a dedicated man that loved the community and did whatever was needed, from working with Cal-Trans on emergency preparedness to vehicle safety within the neighborhood, to warning the residents and prevention of Coyote attacks within the surrounding areas.
As a husband to Harriett and Father to Robert and Melinda, Cohen was an original homeowner in College Park West and worked with DiCarlo Baking Company and later with Wonder Bread, until his retirement in 1995. Upon retirement, Cohen worked with Seal Beach Leisure World in security and volunteered with the Seal Beach Police department for 10 years. Cohen was instrumental in starting the sub-station patch program and was known as the resident handy-man for the department.
Cohen could be seen; proudly driving and displaying his totally restored 1930 Model A Ford and was an active member of the Model A Club of Orange County.
Cohen was not so much a lover of dogs, but loved his two twin dachshunds, Pumpkin and Patch (born on Halloween) and was often seen, walking them throughout the neighborhood. Cohen loved the gym and other than his quick illness, was fit and loved to challenge men half his age to weight lifting competitions.
Cohen and his wife of almost 51 years, traveled the globe, but raised their two children in Seal Beach and are proud grandparents, with grandkids in both California and Colorado.
