2014 Run Seal Beach sells out

The 2014 Run Seal Beach sold out.

For those in the know, this cames as no surprise.  Elizabeth Kane, race director and head of registration said, “We have been tracking even ahead of last year with registration.  Our race is affordable and family friendly.  Our 1K Kids Fun Run sold out two weeks ago and we are still getting calls to see if there is any room.  There isn’t.”

As the 40th Ruby Anniversary race nears this weekend, it is worth reflecting a bit on the history of the organization and how it has continued to grow.  The original beginnings of the race started in 1975 when a group of runners simply began the process of running and raising money for Seal Beach recreation.  Bill Ayres had been instrumental in nurturing and growing the run over so many years.

By 1991 the race had grown, but the original team of volunteers turned over the production of the run to the City of Seal Beach.  In 1999, the Run Seal Beach non-profit charter for a 501(c)3 community grant giving organization was approved.  This then included the annual grant process.  In 2011, the directors established the Director’s Awards for directed giving to organizations outside of the traditional charter boundaries.

The core charter is to raise funds and awareness for recreation or fitness programs or services to benefit the greater Seal Beach Community including Rossmoor and Los Alamitos.  In 2013 Run Seal Beach awarded a new record total of $177,850 to a record 86 organizations.  Since 2003, the organization has given back more than $1,004,000 to more than 102 organizations through the years, touching thousands of residents, students and servicemen. Beneficiaries of the Run include the City of Seal Beach recreation, police and lifeguard departments.

Marc Loopesko, race director, said, “It is important for everyone in Old Town Seal Beach be aware of the race, the street closures and no parking areas. Thank you in advance for making all of our visitors feel welcome.” Race day is April 5. The 1K Kids fun run starts at 7:30 a.m. The 5/10K Run and Walk starts at 8 am.  For more information, visit www.runsealbeach.com.
