Mayberry by the Sea.
Mayberry by the Sea.... that's what our little beach town of 25,000 residents is referred to. Along our main street on any given day you will find friends sitting having their morning coffee. Chatting about how beautiful the beach is with the morning sun reflecting like diamonds off the water, or how great last nights Music in the Park's local band was. Around noon the place is buzzing with business. We have nearly anything one could need. there is a flag shop, a consignment shop, a swimwear shop (of course), jewelery, hats, T-shirts, an art gallery, a great place that makes the best pancakes, an ice cream shop, more nail shops than any town should have just to name a few. We even have our own pier that so far has blown down by a storm, burned by a fisherman, and closed for about a year to replace pilings. We have our own fire station, our own police department, and a beautiful greenbelt through town. A doctors office, eye doctor and dentist within a short walk of our home. We have lived in harmony for many years with not much more than a fire or car accident for longer than I can remember. I am 64 and moved here in 1957 with my sisters, uncle, mom and dad. All has been peaceful. Well up until Wednesday October 12th at 1:30 in the afternoon when a man with anger in his heart and murder on his mind came into town. He walked into a salon and fired his weapon killing 8 innocent people. People who began their day doing what they always do. Going about their day... living and enjoying the blessings of life. Within minutes our little town became national news making Seal Beach the conversation of every newscasters evening news story. One interviewer said, "I guess this is no longer 'Mayberry' is it?" We take exception to that. We have had what has been said to be the worst mass murder in the history of Orange County. It has been said that our town will never be the same small innocent little sleepy town it once was. Well here is a news flash. Both those statements are false. I was at that vigil and Sunday's memorial service at our church and I can tell you my eyes have seen some beautiful moments. I have seen people holding each other that are total strangers crying together. People who have left, everyday since the shooting, candles, flowers and notes at what has become a peaceful quiet place of solitude. Yes our town has be shaken to the core but just like a wind storm shakes and bends a tree and it rights itself again we will do the same. God has a way of mending our hearts, calming our spirit, righting wrongs and placing within each being the desire to stand up and take charge of their lives once again. To remember with respect those who's lives were taken from us. Those who's families were shattered on that fateful day. We, Seal Beacher's are people of hope, honor and love. This
