Seal Beach mayor seeks re-election

Seal Beach Mayor Ellery Deaton, who represents District One, was one of five residents who filed nomination papers for the November election on the first day of the nomination process.

On Monday, Mayor Deaton issued a press release and a photograph when she pulled her nomination papers for the November City Council election.

Mayor Deaton said she filed a Fair Political Practices Commission Form 501, officially declaring her candidacy, before she left on a recent trip. State law requires candidates to file a 501 Candidate Intention statement for each election.

On Monday night, July 14, City Clerk Linda Devine said that five individual had filed their nomination papers that day. Monday was the first day of the nomination process.

Anyone who wishes to run has until 5 p.m., Aug. 8, to put in the required paperwork.

Three City Council seats are up for election this year; District One (Old Town and Surfside), District Three (the Hill, Bridgeport, Heron Pointe and Seal Beach Shores) and District Five (Leisure World).

So far, only aspiring candidates for the District One and Three seats have filed their nomination papers, according to Devine. Last week, two individuals said they would run for the District 5 seat, but they have not yet filed papers.

Council members Gordon Shanks, District Three, and Michael Levitt, District Five, have termed out. The City Charter limits council members to two consecutive terms. However, the charter allows former council members to seek office after they have spent a term out of office.

To win the election, a candidate must receive 50-percent of the vote, plus one, or face a runoff.

So far, the declared candidates by district are, District One, Ellery Deaton (incumbent, Mayor), Charles Antos, Tom Quinn. District Three, Mike Veripapa, Scott Weir. District Five, non-filed as of press time.
