Over 200 volunteers clean Seal Beach sands

Saturday’s 76-degree sunny weather turned out to be a beautiful day in Seal Beach.  From 8 am to noon, the Surfrider Foundation had 222 volunteers who picked up 773 lbs of “trash.”  According to Tony Soriano, chair of Surfrider in Huntington Beach and Seal Beach, that’s 3.4 pounds of trash per person.

The trash included 8.6 pounds of Styrofoam!  Also, volunteers gathered 176 cigarette butts, eight syringes, and the usual plastic bottles, bottle caps, straws, and assorted plastic toys.

Volunteers came from all over to help.  One volunteer, Cliff from Detroit, who was visiting Seal Beach  came out to help.  Large organizations that came to clean up the beach were: Edison, Technip,  All State Insurance, Crew 680, Riverside DLT, and Parex USA.

In addition, many students helped, as well as scouts, and people with a concern for the environment.  The Surfrider Foundation executive committee was on-hand to provide environmental education and assisted our volunteers.  Clean up was sponsored by the River’s End Café.
