Council: demolish pier building

The City Council directed Seal Beach staff this week to demolish the former Ruby’s restaurant building at the end of the pier and make mandatory repairs to the pier. Staff is expected to come back with a report on how to make that happen in February.

District One Councilwoman Ellery Deaton proposed removing the building and re-opening the end of the pier to the public. She said if a restaurant wants to build there, the city could address that at a later point in time.

Community Development Director Jim Basham put the cost of demolishing the Ruby’s building at about $1.5 million. A staff presentation put mandatory pier repairs at $1.8 million.

District Four Councilman Gary Miller asked for an estimate of the cost to build a restroom at the end of the pier.

Basham said if council approved the building demolition, he would need to ask Coastal Commission staff if a coastal permit is required beforehand.
