Stop speeding on Electric

I wrote a letter last year addressing this issue and realized that perhaps my letter did not capture the attention of the right people.

I’m speaking about those people who have the decision-making influence needed to address this problem.

Let’s review:  There is a stop sign on the corner of 12th St and Electric.  There is not another stop sign on the south side of Electric until you reach Seal Beach Blvd/Ocean Ave.

As stated before, this is 10-blocks of uninterrupted road.  The current speed limit along this stretch of road is 35 mph.

There is ONE speed limit sign on the South side of Electric, just east of 12th  and Electric.

The average speed in any other business or residential area, stated on the California Department of Motor Vehicles website (www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/hdbk/speed_limits) is 25 mph.

So, my first question is: Why isn’t this area under the 25 mph speed limit code?

Every evening and every weekend this strip of road becomes a “race way” for those who are determined to find out how fast their car can do 0-60 mph in “.xx ” seconds.

I bring this subject up again because this problem is not going away.  It is only getting worse.

The greenbelt is such a beautiful and unique place in the middle of our gorgeous community that many, many residents, families with small children, and folks with their pets, enjoy the space during the day, into the evening/dusk hours and all day on the weekends.

Please, can we consider reducing the speed along this stretch of road?

I will repeat the same suggestions as I noted last year:

1.) Reduce the speed limit and paint that speed limit on the asphalt. 2.) Flashing red lights at the major intersections on this stretch of road:  14th, etc. 3.) An additional stop sign at Electric and 14th. 4.) Reflective dots in the roadway adjacent to additional postings of the speed limit, and at all crosswalks. 5.)Rows of Botts’ dots strategically placed along this stretch of road.

I find it curious that we are willing to notify motorcycle riders that they may be cited for loud exhaust systems on their motorcycles but we are not more concerned about the cars reaching speeds of 50, 60, or higher speeds along this stretch of road.

Please consider these or other options to reduce this problem.
