A jailer employed by the city of Seal Beach was arraigned Wednesday, Dec. 28, on one count of bribery. According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Jose Alday, 32, of Santa Ana, accepted money and an iPad to allow an inmate access to unspecified contraband and unauthorized visitor contact. Alday pleaded not guilty to that charge as well as pleading not guilty to one felony count of possession of steroids and one misdemeanor count of possessing a methamphetamine pipe.

Alday is a "non-sworn" employee, meaning that he is not a peace officer as defined by California law even though he works for the Seal Beach Police Department. According to the DA's Office, Alday has worked as a Seal Beach city jailer for about four years.

Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles confirmed that Alday was arrested on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25.

Alday is being held without bail, according to both the Orange County Sherrif's Department Web site and the Orange County Superior Court Web site.
