Lions in gear for 70th Fish Fry on Saturday, July 19

Why go to the 70th annual Seal Beach Lions Fish Fry?  Perhaps you need another reason beyond the rich history of the event or the great food & drink?  The Seal Beach Lions have outdone themselves this year with three great reasons to go to the Fish Fry.

First and most basically, the fact is, on Sunday around 4:30  to 5 p.m., the Lions will be hosting an opportunity drawing for the brand new black 2014 Ford Escape.  This vehicle is best described by US News and Consumer Reports, where it was ranked in the top ten for all compact SUVs. It states, “With its agile handling and powerful EcoBoost engine choices, the 2014 Ford Escape earns praise from reviewers as one of the best-performing compact SUVs in the segment.”

Continuing, Car and Driver magazine says of the showcase car, “The Escape’s sportier, upmarket look improves its curb appeal, and the interior continues that stylish motif. To defend itself against a slew of competitors, the Escape offers premium features and a choice of three different four-cylinder engines, two of which are turbocharged.”  At a sticker price of slightly over $30,000, this is worth taking a look at.  Of course, the Lions only provide the best, so the Escape is premium all the way.

If you want to have a one in seven hundred and fifty chance (1 in 750), which is certainly better than nearly any other car winning odds, buy your ticket now from a Lion you know or go online to www.sealbeachlions.org

Chairman Mike Haley says, “We are so thankful for the opportunity drawing and especially want to thank Original Parts Group, the Chamber of Commerce, Southland Credit Union, Run Seal Beach and the City of Seal Beach for being such strong sponsors.  Original Parts Group is our presenting sponsor, and they truly did a lot to help us out this year.”  The Seal Beach Chamber is again sponsoring the hourly drawings as well.  Merchants from all over Seal Beach and beyond have given to help the Lions raise funds for all the work they do here in Seal Beach.

The second reason is a very special young man and magician, Daniel Hurtt.  He was born and raised in Southern California. As of now, he also lives in Seal Beach.  This will be his sixth year performing to the delight of adults and children alike.

He says about his love of magic, “I have always been fascinated by magic, but it wasn’t until I opened my first magic set that I began to view it in a different light. Slowly the idea of pursing magic as a profession emerged. A few years later, I witnessed a magician produce a helicopter on an empty stage. This opened my eyes to the world of Las Vegas magicians. Their ability to create any piece of magic they desire with unlimited resources inspires me. Here I am, almost 10 years later.”

Though his future vision involves going on a world tour and being signed at a Las Vegas casino as a permanent show; he is still a former Leo from the Seal Beach Lions club.  Enjoy Daniel at various special times throughout the Fish Fry.

If you still need more of a reason, it is the outstanding music presented for free by many bands, such as on Saturday: 11 a.m., The Losers; 12:45 p.m., The Grillo Experience; 2:30 p.m. Robby Armstrong; 5:15 p.m. Persons of Interest.  On Sunday the bands are: 11 a.m. Gringos Playeros; 12:15 p.m. Sugarlips; 2:30 p.m. Joe Schmoe; and finally at 5 p.m Flying Squad.

Dino Syrengelas, who with Marcia Haley is responsible for bands indicated that it was going to be something special.  Dino said, “thanks to Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, we have our entire sound system donated.  Larry Italia has gathered some amazing members to form a pick up band – for the first and last time.”

The group members have played with a variety of key stars and performers.  Larry Italia, the band Gringo Playeros, who are the first band on Sunday, said, “While we are not household names the list of musicians the band members have played with over the years is extensive and impressive: Quincy Jones, Sting, Anita Baker, Babyface, Glen Campbell, Rick James, Tina Marie, Brothers Johnson, Cameo, Bootsy Collins, Paul Shaffer, Camilo Sesto, Jeff Pocaro, Chuck Berry, Jan and Dean, Bo Diddly, Bobby Mc Ferrin, Nathan East, Steve Gadd, Larry Coryell, Richie Cole, Tom Scott, Gabor Szabo and Richard Tee.”

So come eat, dance, purchase an opportunity drawing ticket, see some magic and listen to bands you know and some which might not ever exist again, because this weekend here in Seal Beach, the Fish Fry is the place to be.
