Juvenile white sharks spotted off Surfside

The Seal Beach Marine Safety (Lifeguard) Department confirmed the sighting of two juvenile, 5- to 6-foot white sharks swimming outside of the surf line off of Surfside beach today, Wednesday, April 20. White sharks are also known as great white sharks, so-named because of their white underbellies.

On Tuesday, April 28, the Marine Safety Department received reports and video of sharks off the Surfside beach.  Lifeguards searched the water and were unable to confirm sharks in the area.  This morning, Lifeguards searched the water and confirmed that juvenile white sharks are in the area, outside of the surf line off of Surfside beach.

The Seal Beach Marine Safety Department has posted signs on the beach warning beach goers of the possible hazard. Marine Safety is also working with neighboring beaches to watch for any shark activity.

Sightings of these animals are rare along our coastline and, when seen, are typically passing through our waters, en route to another destination.

Due to the warmer waters brought on by this year’s El Niño, baby shark season has officially begun off the Southern California Coast and, according to the biology experts at Cal State University, Long Beach’s Shark Lab, this means that more sharks will likely be sighted closer to shore as their pups are born.
