Crime Log: Police investigating ‘billy club’ assault

IN SEAL?BEACH

Monday, September 7

Illegal Peddler—11:05 a.m.—Hazlenut and Rose—The caller said a large group of approximately 15 to 20 individuals was going door-to-door through the neighborhood, asking for donations to a new church. Police were unable to located them.

Vehicle Burglary—11:46 a.m.—Crestview Avenue—According to the caller, the crime took place sometime during the night. Loss: unknown. Report taken.

Reckless Drivers—7:08 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller said approximately eight sports cars were racing northbound on Pacific Coast Highway, past Surfside. Police unit 207 found the vehicles in heavy traffic at 7:10 p.m. They were not racing at that time. Unit 207 determined that no further police services were necessary.

Suspicious—8:13 p.m.—First Street—The caller said a man, possibly drunk, had been seen relieving himself on a fence and was now cleaning out his car. Police unit 207 contacted a man and determined he was cleaning out his car. No further police services were necessary.

DUI—8:55 p.m.—405 Freeway and Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said a car had been weaving in lanes and almost hit the curb. The car was now pulled over to the side of the road.

Police arrested Arturo Romeroramirez on suspicion of drunken driving and Fernando Zepedaherhandez on suspicion of public drunkenness.

Water Problem—8:56 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller said a shower head had broken to the point where water was continuously running. Referred to Public Works.

Tuesday, September 8

Animal Information—7:46 a.m.—Island View Drive—The caller said a pitbull dog was sitting on a lawn.

The caller said the dog lies in the area, at an unknown house, and had been aggressive in the past.

Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Possible DUI—11:16 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard and Westminster Avenue—The caller reported a possible drunk driver.

The suspect’s sedan was swerving all over the road and the car was moving slowly. Police were unable to locate the suspicious car.

Petty Theft—1:21 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller reported the theft of the caller’s backpack from in front of the front door. Log entry.

Suspicious Occupied Vehicle—4:57 p.m.—Ironwood Avenue—The caller said a sedan had been parked and running for the past hour and might be occupied by a man.

Police contacted an individual and arrested Francis Warren on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wednesday, September 9

Patrol Check Requested—12:29 p.m.—Westminster Avenue—The caller said she smelled a strong odor of marijuana. She said she had been smelling it for the past few days and on that day it was worse than before. She said it was coming from the area to the rear of the Post Office. Police were unable to locate the source of the scent.

Found Property—1:45 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller turned a purse into the south substation. The purse was booked into property. Log entry.

Animal Cruelty—7:16 p.m.—Seventh Street—The caller was walking her dog when she saw a dog locked inside a car with the windows rolled up.

The caller was concerned because of the heat. Police contacted the owners and advised them against leaving a dog locked in a car. In California, it is a crime to leave an animal unattended in a car under conditions that endanger animal’s health. The penalty is a $100 fine for the first offense and may increase to $500 for subsequent offenses. The penalty for leaving a child in a car is a $100 fine, period.

Suspicious Person—8:19 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said a man was in the restroom smoking and doing his laundry in the sink. Based on a San Bernardino warrant, Dennis Takashi Martin was cited and released on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia.

Suspicious Person—11:29 p.m.—First Street and Marina Drive—The caller heard what sounded like a man on the Marina bridge, yelling and swearing. The caller said this had been occurring off and on for the past week. The man was gone by the time a police unit arrived.

Thursday, September 10

Found Property—9:50 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller reported finding three cell phones. Report taken.

Keep the Peace—12:48 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said a restaurant refused to give her purse back to her after she left it there, claiming she had failed to pay the full amount of the bill. The purse was returned.

Friday, September 11

Animal Noise—3:23 a.m.—Harvard Lane—The caller said there was a continuing problem with dogs being let out through the doggy door in the middle of the night. They bark and wake the caller up. Police unit 206 listened for several minutes and didn’t hear a barking dog. No further police services were necessary.

Welfare Check—9:15 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—Two different callers asked police to check on the welfare of a man in a wheel chair who appeared to be in his late 70s and was dressed in very warm clothing on the corner near the bus bench. Police unit 106 contacted him. He was waiting for the bus and did not want assistance. No further police services were necessary.

Medical Aid—9:22 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller said a man was possibly stung by a stingray. Referred to Seal Beach Lifeguards.

Petty Theft Report—2:02 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—Loss: a bicycle, a skateboard, fishing gear and a passport taken from the caller’s patio between 11 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, and 7 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11.

Suspicious Vehicle—3:50 p.m.—Avalon Drive—The caller said a large commercial refrigerator truck was running and parked in the wrong direction. Police unit 107 contacted the driver, who was transporting grapes from his vineyard. No further police services were necessary.

Disturbance—6:53 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller said a man in the lobby was yelling at customers and employees. The caller thought he might be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and appeared to be irrational. The man walked out and was in the parking lot. Police unit 241 contacted the man and apparently advised him to discontinue his disruptive behavior.

Suspicious—10:37 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said a suspicious individual was trying to get into a unit at the location. He was trying to open doors and the caller also thought the man was trying to light a car on fire. At 10:48 a.m., someone reported seeing the individual rolling what might be marijuana on the back of a car. Police arrested Christopher Chapman on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Saturday, September 12

Disturbance, Noise—12:13 a.m.—Seal Way—The caller said numerous individuals (the log did not specify how many) were being loud near Lifeguard Shack 8. They  were gone by the time police arrived.

Defraud Innkeeper—1:24 a.m.—Elder Avenue—The driver dropped off a passenger, but he has not come out to pay. Police unit 241 contacted the passenger at the front door. At 1:45 a.m., the passenger was paying the taxi fare. Assisted.

Found Property—6:07 a.m.—First Street—The caller found a wallet in the sand. Report taken.

Municipal Code Complaint—6:46 a.m.—Walker Lee and Montecito Road—The caller told the Seal Beach Police Department that a concrete crew was present and getting ready to pour concrete. The caller said there was a continuing problem with the crew starting too early. Referred to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department,  which had jurisdiction because the location was in Rossmoor.

Municipal Code Complaint—6:50 a.m.—13th Street and Ocean Avenue—The caller reported an unspecified number of dogs off leash and on the beach. Police unit 107 advised the person responsible for the dogs about the municipal code and that person apparently said they would comply.

Bike Stop—10:25 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—Seal Beach Police unit S34 stopped a man on a bicycle on the Long Beach side of the border. Brandon Naradovy was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine.

Disturbance—1:37 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller reported a dispute between six men and women at the rear of the location, possibly arguing over digging in the trash for boxes. Police unit 106 determined they were all family members and had permission from the management to get the cardboard. No further police services were necessary.

Sunday, September 13

Disturbance, Noise—6:22 a.m.—A Row, Surfside Colony—The caller said five or six individuals with sleeping bags were being loud on the beach near the main entrance to Surfside Colony. Police arrested Gavin Miovanni Malone on suspicion of public drunkenness. Two other women and a man were advised about the Municipal Code and left the beach.

Graffiti/Vandalism—12:11  p.m.—College Park and Yale—The caller said the back side of the sound wall on College Park drive, just past the bridge, had been painted with black spray pent. Police left a message with both Caltrans and the Seal Beach Public Works Department.

Suspicious Circumstances—9:26 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller said six to eight juveniles had been looking into cars in the parking lot. Two of them had skateboards. Log entry.

DUI—10:26 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller said a car was swerving. Police arrested Brett Zimmer on suspicion of driving under the influence. Police gave the car keys to a woman identified only as Susan.

Monday, September 14

Suspicious Vehicle—5:32 a.m.—Harbor Way—The caller reported a car parked on the street with the passenger door open. The car was not familiar to the neighborhood. Police contacted two sleeping individuals and interviewed them in the field.

Monday, September 7

Welfare Check—9:21 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—Someone saw a man leaning against the wall on the west side of St. Andrews. The information was relayed second hand to Leisure world security. Police were unable to locate him.

Wednesday, September 2

Welfare Check—5:09 a.m.—Green Avenue—The caller reported a woman in her 50s rolling around and laying in the driveway. The woman was talking to herself, and didn’t look familiar to the caller. The caller’s husband asked if she was okay, and she said she was in pain because she just got back from a volleyball game. Patrol located her and she said she had been shot three times in the back of her leg. However, officers were unable to confirm this. Mmedics transported the woman to Los Alamitos Medical Center for an evaluation.

Wednesday, September 2

Medical Aid–7:58 a.m.—Bloomfield Street—The caller reported a 59-year-old woman fainted in the garden area, and the Orange County Fire Authority was en route. The woman was now conscious, vomiting and sitting down. Patrol assisted.

Thursday, September 3

Welfare Check—5:40 p.m.—Farquhar Avenue—The caller reported a neighbor having a mental breakdown, and heard her screaming “why” for the past few hours. The caller believed the individual was possibly a high school or middle school aged child. Patrol contacted the individual who said she was under the weather but denied screaming. She refused medical attention.

Thursday, September 3

Drunk—7:59 p.m.—Katella Avenue—The caller reported a woman in her 40s inside the coffee shop pouring alcohol into a cup. The alcohol is in a brown bag. The woman admitted to drinking earlier tonight but not at the coffee shop She agreed to give the liquor to the officer to dump out, and she didn’t have any symptoms of intoxication. Patrol advised her on having an open container of alcohol in public, and learned her driving license was suspended.

IN ROSSMOOR

Tuesday, September 1

Grand Theft Report—11:29 a.m. –Rowena Drive—The caller reported that both catalytic converters were stolen off  the caller’s car sometime during the previous night.

Assist Outside Agency—4:50 p.m.—Salmon Drive—A tree branch fell on the caller’s vehicle. The branch was moved off the vehicle and onto the side of the road.

The caller contacted the city to have the branch removed from the road.

Wednesday, September 2

Illegal Parked Vehicle—7:43 a.m.—Foster Road—Nine parking citations were issued. Seven for parking in a no-parking zone during posted hours and two for parking in a no-parking anytime zone. The majority of vehicles were parked in the bike lane across from Richard Henry Lee Elementary, which forced students to ride their bikes in traffic lanes.

Friday, September 4

Disturbance—2:21 a.m.—Bradbury Road—A caller reported a loud party playing music near the cross streets of Old Mill Road and Wallingsford Road. The caller also said people were smoking marijuana.

Welfare Check—1:30 p.m.—Wembley Road—The caller requested a patrol car to check on her 95-year-old dad, who lives alone. The caller said that his cell phone goes straight to voicemail when called, which is unusual. The caller also said that the dad is known to fall and not call for help, and just waits for his daughter to check on him.
